The majority of us use public transportation means until we can
afford a car of our own, but when we're in a hurry or we want to enjoy a little
bit of luxury we tend to use taxis. Lately, taxis aren't the first choice for
the luxury of private transportation, some companies have started online
platforms to join car owners to people who want to enjoy a quiet, luxurious
ride. Uber was the first company to provide this service to the Egyptian
market, and 2 years later Careem joined the hive, and now we have 4 companies
operating in the market. This has raised the bar for the satisfaction of the
riders, especially that they have found that white taxis' owners show no
respect to the fare system. On the other hand, the legislation of those private
drivers isn't close to a closure, so mainly they get a fine every time an
officer gets their identity as private drivers.
People still use both means, but on a daily basis, it seems
like those companies are getting a larger share of the market. Taxi drivers are
frustrated with these companies, and hoping that this would end in the near
future, but on the other hand, they aren't adjusting their way to attract
customers and keep their loyalty to the traditional way.
We've talked with both parties and reached the conclusion
that taxi drivers regard those companies as illegal practitioners, and will
sure come to an end as supply will become a lot more than the demand. From the
companies' perspective, they find the market is nourishing and won't come to an
end that close. It's a sure thing that both parties have some irregularities
but the fact that people regard the irregularity of taxis is to have a working
counter and a polite driver means that the taxi drivers need to re-evaluate
their position in order to regain their proper position as the legislated
service provider. This is not taking sides or whatsoever, but it's a fatal
competition between legislation and quality. It doesn't have to be this way,
but as we've been taught that ego and taking things for granted always turn out
for the worst.
